it is not DNS. It is not HOSTS. Exchange is possessive.

OK, thanks to you guys (John and Len) having helped me I am getting
somewhere.
I added aquesthosting.com to hosts file on Exchange server and it will
now receive email from the IMAIL server.
I added erinhope.com to hosts file on Imail server. It still does not
receive email from the Exchange server. This I need to work on.
However, I can telnet from each server to the other now on port 25 and
connect.
John, my fault on split DNS then. I understood split to be hosting
internal zones on an internal server and your external zones on a
separate server, which I do. I didn't know I had to create zones on my
internal DNS server that are for external hosts. Is that what your
saying, because that seems odd.
Since the exchange server and the imail server are hosting multiple
zones I would assume the easiest thing to do would be create zones on my
INTERNAL dns server for each domain. If I understand you right. This
would eliminate the need for the hosts file's use. Since I have never
had issue with any external mail being sent/received to these servers I
know my external dns is and has been right.

Your internal DNS should forward that to your ISP DNS who should get the
public (ie wrong, public) answer from your external DNS.
add mail.aquesthosting.com and aquesthosting.com internal IPs to
Exchange's
hosts file

there is your problem. Why can't the exchange box telnet to Imail's int
IP:25.

again, same as above.
Since you can ping and traceroute from each to the other, but just can't
TCP to port 25, its sounds like a firewall policy or packet filtering
rule
blocking access to port 25.
