My first job ever in IT was the 'backup kid' during a summer in college.
Every morning I changed the tapes and cataloged them.  You can be certain if
there had been a fire I would have grabbed *MY* tapes on the way out :)
lol.

I do hope that is an informal policy (or one posted in jest) -- such a
policy would likely create a *huge* liability for the company in the event
that someone died trying to recover.  Just in case anyone encounters a fire
at their workplace (it does happen), please don't go after the backup tapes
-- please leave the building immediately.  If a company can't afford
off-site backups and/or a fire-resistant safe for on-site backups, they
almost certainly won't be able to reward your heroism to a degree that it
would be worth risking your life.

I'm sure most people know this, but I would be surprised if there aren't
some people on this list who would be tempted to go for the backup tapes.
