My first job ever in IT was the 'backup kid' during a summer in college. Every morning I changed the tapes and cataloged them. You can be certain if there had been a fire I would have grabbed *MY* tapes on the way out :) lol.

I do hope that is an informal policy (or one posted in jest) -- such a policy would likely create a *huge* liability for the company in the event that someone died trying to recover. Just in case anyone encounters a fire at their workplace (it does happen), please don't go after the backup tapes -- please leave the building immediately. If a company can't afford off-site backups and/or a fire-resistant safe for on-site backups, they almost certainly won't be able to reward your heroism to a degree that it would be worth risking your life. I'm sure most people know this, but I would be surprised if there aren't some people on this list who would be tempted to go for the backup tapes. -Scott --- Declude JunkMail: The advanced anti-spam solution for IMail mailservers.
