I would go in for the backup tapes. We are the Fire Dept! ;) Of course
I would be suited up for the task. I have heard it a thousand times "I
don't care how hot it was I would go and get my (whatever)" I can tell
you it is SO hot that even in bunker gear you can't get anywhere near
whatever it is that you seek. People also make the mistake of thinking
that they can get out no matter what, all it takes is one breath of
the nasty air and you are done for. We had a fire at Christmas time
and a family of four were trapped. I got the 5-year-old that started
it and his mom out. The girls from the basement when they got out to
the front yard had a small whiff of the smoke and started choking to
the point they couldn't move. People do die literally feet from the
exits.

Also, I would suggest getting training from your local fire dept on
the proper use of the portable fire extinguishers. It is funny
whenever we do a training we pick out one of the guys (Guys always
think they can do it) to put out the fire first with no training. Even
with multiple extinguishers they rarely put the fire out. With
training most people can properly put out a small fire quickly, they
also learn when to run and call us. Don't be proud, call your fire
dept and get the training, even if you think you know how to work an
extinguisher. Firefighters train all the time to put fires out. Keep
in mind, also that the Dry-Chem extinguishers are corrosive to the
electronics. We have seen people blast a smoking fan on a computer
with the Dry-Chem and ruin the computer, it is very messy stuff.

One thing to consider also for the computer room is what is above your
server room. If there was a fire above the room and the fire dept puts
it out you could have water damage in your room. Broken pipes should
be considered as well. I have seem many computers ruined with water
damage.

As for removing ceiling tiles above the servers, that is probably a
violation of the fire code in your area.

I enjoyed this thread, it is fun to learn from what others are doing,
even with the air surrounding their email servers (almost as much fun
as reading about people beating up on AOL, ok not really.) We have our own
PSAP (911 system) so we have to have backups for our backups, we truly
have a mission critical operation.
