My first thought is come on Scott. But...

Sad, but true.

Part of the problem is the media (on one extreme, real life cars don't explode in huge fireballs; on the other extreme, you can't just run into a burning building and pull someone out like in the movies). Often, you only have seconds to escape from a fire.

As part of some volunteer work I do, I've seen hundreds of homes and businesses after fires occurred there (usually while the fire department is still there), and have spoken with quite a few people who have lost friends, loved ones, and pets in fires, as well as people who came quite close to dying in the fire. In most cases, the damage and loss of life could have been easily prevented. Although many say "I wish I hadn't lost X", not once have I heard someone say "I'm so glad I glad I found X before escaping" (where "X" is any object -- a wallet, files, computer backups, etc.).
