Quite  right.  There  are  lots  of  mail servers that do this kind of
clustering.  I  shouldn't have said "completely impossible without..."
when  what  I meant was "luckily possible with...." I think I was lost
in my usual optimistic zeal.

Anyway,  the point remains that if NetMail can have its banner changed
(which  you  didn't  mention), IMail would be able to form a primitive
cluster  with  NetMail  during  your migration, allowing your proposed
non-standard setup to work.
