Actually,  it  simply  stands  for  "inter,"  implying  collection  of
multiple   connected   elements;   "internet"  (not  capitalized)  for
"internetwork,"   or  multiple  connected  networks;  and  capitalized
"Internet" by extension for "the global, public internetwork." I don't
believe that "International" is involved.
