I used an Intel Nic and we have now Upgraded to using the Alacritech Server NIC's.  We have a 4 - 100 Mbps ports and I have them Teamed with Fast Etherchannel and they are working very well.  http://www.alacritech.com

We did have problems with the Integrated pro 100/s on the motherboard that we were using but I think it was more of a limitation of the motherboard than of the NIC..

I have never had very good luck with 3Com NIC's but I have only tried a few and they were more suited for a workstation than a server.

Ips says buy a 3Com but I couldn't find any, so I can't say the model #
Also they are expensive.

About the hw;

Dell PE 1750
Dual Xeon 2.4 HT Enabled
512 Mb DDR Ram
2x36 GB 10K Rpm Scsi Disk (One for windows (c) and spool (g), second is for Imail (d))
Dual Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet (2. inf is for local network, Imail uses this for routing to SMTP gateway on local network)

Win update was saying there were no updates. I just upgraded the device drivers from Dell web site.
