Had this problem with a company that uses Earthlink
for their remote sales folks. They could change their SMTP to use
Earthlink, but this presented another problem. If they tried to send mail
to an internal user, the mail server being set to force authentication for
domain users would bounce the message. There was no way for the remote
user to authenticate since Earthlink was now relaying the mail. The only
way around it quickly and easily was to setup another mail server listening on
another port that would relay the mail from the remote users to the main
server. Then I set the new server to authenticate to the main server and
relay mail for the remotes. Worked like a charm.
