I have been experiencing these messages in the event log a few times per day. The service will restart, usually. However, the service will eventually refuse to re-start because it cannot bind port 25. Essentially, it looks as if the port is taken (it shows up in netstat) by the previous SMTPD32.exe process which has in effect become a "zombie". The only way to restore service is via a reboot of the machine (win 2k AS).

I upgraded from 8.03 to 8.05HF3 on the advice of ipswitch tech support who claimed that this was a known problem that is resolved in 8.05HF3. Apparently, that is not correct. I have fiddled with EHLO/HELO, VRFY anti-spam measures as recommended on the board, though with no solid results. I am willing to go to 8.latest version, however, from other posts I have seen, it does not appear that the problem is resolved?

Can anyone shed more light on this?

The logs don't say much other than the last thing that is always listed prior to a "Starting ..." message is "Performing anti-spam checks".

Thanks.

Frank
