We have had our mail server set for relay for addresses and have had cases where virus infected PC where relaying out our server. When we force the clients to authenticate this stops these infected pcs from sending out messages.

That is a perfectly legit way to setup IMail relaying for trusted IP address ranges. There are not open relay concerns with this, unless you inadvertently include a spammers IP address in your relay configuration.
