Holger:

I am not sure whether you run into this bug:

6227829 - some optical drives do not behave well with DMA enabled on
systems with CSB5

The symptoms were similar and if you try to install on a system with
this kind of optical drive, it does not work and fails as follow:

[...]
Setting up Java. Please wait...
ERROR: Can't find windowing software, exiting to shell
#

Can you try the following workaround and see whether this fixes your
problem:

For a GRUB based system (nevada/S11), at the grub boot screen, "e"dit
the default entry, "e"dit the kernel...multiboot line, append -B
atapi-cd-dma-enabled=0

Make sure you hit RETURN to save the entry.

This change will only be remembered for the current boot cycle. If you
wish to make the change persistant, you need to edit the grub memu.lst
file (see bootadm list-menu and friends)

If this fixes your problem, it will be good if you can run cdrw -l and
get the Drive information.
