the ietf is becoming full of mechanisms of little use.  yet there remain
some very hard but useful and known to be usable problems to solve.  can
we spend our energies on these?

on the other hand, there is the theory that it is better that idle hands be
occupied with useless but non-damaging work lest they find damaging things
to do.  the problem with this approach is that the router code bases are
unreliable and unstable.  any unneeded additions will only make them worse.
