"The SRF59 easily tops any portable I've used other than the 2010, which
simply isn't fair to the 59, but I hope those who've been so generous
with their praise as to suggest people don't need Drakes or whatever
are exaggerating..."

Perhaps your claims of exaggeration are exaggerations. ;) I don't recall
seeing comments about not needing "Drakes or whatever" or insuinations that
all we need is the SRF59. Maybe it was in the post that the 59 cures warts
and the gout. I tend to skip over those snake-oil posts. Trimming
away some of the zealotry, the message seems to me that there is a certain
satisfaction and fun of occasionally getting by with a lot less ($16) than a
full station commo rig ($$$). I get considerable satisfaction using "zero
power", dxing with a crystal radio set. Hearing a 1000 mile station on my
xtl radio is as big a thrill as hearing a TA on my Drakes hooked to a ewe or
BOG. To be fair to my 2010, it is not a true "portable" in the same vein as
the 59. The 2010 is more of a "luggable" than a "carryable" listen to while
on your feet radio. (Consider the shoulder carried boombox era an
aberration).
Point of reference: The 59 with battery and earbuds weighs 3.6 ounces. A
single battery of the 2010 weighs 5.1 ounces. I can listen to my 59, 39, 37
or DT200VX while walking the dog. I would listen to my 2010 while walking
Roscoe only if he agreed to carry the radio, but I'd have a better chance
training him to make coffee for me in the morning.
