bq. increment shouldn't be on the registry. The registry is there to create and
hold metrics.
Looking at MetricsRegistry source code in metrics2.lib of hadoop 1.0, I do see
the following method:

public void incr(String name)
{code}
It would be nice to voice concern in a HADOOP JIRA so that it is heard by more
developers.
