v4l should build on anything from 2.4 onwards. However, testing of that
has been limited. Any problems with that have to be reported to the v4l
list (as you have already done). They are very responsive to that (they've
fixed a lot of problems in these areas already).

I will NOT keep a copy around in the 0.5.x series and up. Otherwise many
people will just fallback to the copied drivers and not report that there
is a problem. And besides, using 0.4 is always an option.
