I guess you are trying to do this for perfomance with
mplayer. 
I would suggest the best aproach now would be to try
the latest 0.3.6 ivtv driver. Use the latest (0.10.4)
xdriver and the use the Xv driver to display mplayer
output instead of sending it to /dev/video32 directly.

I can't think of anything that you are doing that
would cause /dev/video0 to become broken  though. All
the register tweaking we do for playback affects just
playback not grabbing of data from /dev/video0.
