Should I try the devel driver? How can I uninstall the 0.2 driver?

Yes that makes sense. I'm not sure how to help though,
the register poking we've been doing is with the raw
output not the input. But there is a lot of register
setting that gets done by the firmware only when
something changes but not every time you play
something. Assuming that capturing is the same it
might be worth doing things like re-setting the
capture size as well.
