connector on cuckoo board

Such a board would act as an extension of existing Arduino, but I doubt it
can be done without SMD components, right ?

this seems mandatory, indeed, even if it takes room.

What about selecting onboard Xtal (16MHz for Arduino 2009) or internal clock
? I could add another Xtal on Cuckoo board but I have doubts about room...

Do you mean to power the PIC ?

That would be great, something like
http://www.solarbotics.com/products/kardw/.

About PIC selection, I've found 18f26k22 as an interesting candidate:
  - 64KB memory
  - 2 * USART
  - I2C *and* SPI (2 * MSSP)
  - independant analog pins, easier to map pins
  - clock up to 64MHz, 16MIPS
  - 3 external interupts
  - 2 * PWM output

but not in production... Little brother 18f25k22 can be sampled, but "only"
have 32KB memory. I'll try this one I guess. On the other side of the nest,
Arduino provides:
  - 1 USART
  - 2 external interupts
  - SPI
  - I2C within ADC pins
  - 6 PWM channels (this can't be defeated...)

This can be cuckooed by 18f25k22 :)
