Obviously full function mailing lists are totally important, but I'm
also interested in something in between.

Let's address this when we look at the user repository model. For example,
I want to continue the funtionality in JDBCVirtualUserTable, but I'd be
happier still to integrate the user model directly. Which is one reason why
having HypersonicSQL as a standard component, so that we can count on a
database, is part of my list. Actually, it is on the Wiki, but not in the
e-mail. I forgot to add it (that e-mail was mostly written a couple of
months ago).

A "group" (i.e., a list) address might be just the thing you want.
I don't know if you need to tie this to a user table though... could potentially add a bunch of abstraction that isn't really necessary. I'm not sure exactly what Kenny is using this for, but often I'll want to just associated these 14 email addresses with those 14 email addresses (and maybe as Kenny has extended, have certain addresses go to multiple recipients). This doesn't need a mailing list and doesn't need any extra user information... just want those email addresses rewritten as these... a lose equivalent of mod_rewrite.
