I am currently curious as to whether anyone is successfully converting from any of the
popular 3d rendering applications currently available to Java3d?
I noticed in the latest edition of "The Java 3D API Specification" (2nd Edition -
Sowizral, Rushforth & Deering - ISBN:0-201-71041-2) that the Lightwave demo will
import Lightwave 3D format 3d scene files (albeit with extremely limited
functionality). Has anyone actually tried using this?
I also discovered that NSCA has some programs for loading files from the following
programs (see http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/~srp/Java3D/portfolio/index.html for more
details):
NCSA's 3D Studio (3DS) loader
NCSA's AutoCAD DXF loader (Version 12)
NCSA's Protein Data Bank (PDB) loader
NCSA's Digital Elevation Map (DEM) loader
NCSA's Imagine (IOB) loader
NCSA's TrueSpace (COB) loader (Version 2)
NCSA's VRML 97 (WRL) loader
NCSA's PLAY loader
NCSA's VTK ASCII loader
NCSA's VTK binary loader (big endian only)
NCSA's NFF loader
NCSA's Wavefront OBJ (including material files for colors (OBJ) loader
Any users of any of these programs? Furthermore, assuming everything simply works as
advertised (LOL), are there any particular recommendations or endorsements of 3D
rendering/animation tools?
Thanks!
Dave McLure
