There is a simple little tool called Milkshape that can write out
wavefront OBJ's. This tool can read a zillion formats including Halflife
and Quake models. It also allows you to create some simple objects very
easily. It also handles normals, texture mapping and materials. It also
handles animations, as this is designed for use in building models for
games. I highly recommend it. Just as an example, I created a bunch of
very nice rocks just by starting with a low polygon sphere and dragging
vertices around, pulled in a sample texture, mapped it and rotated the
object in real time in their viewer before exporting it to OBJ and loading
it into my scene. Very easy for a modelling hack like myself.
Amapi is a very nice 3d editor around $450. You can very easily
create complex objects, extrusions, cutouts, etc. Most of all it has the
ability to start with a stetch of a face profile and build up the model very
easly. It also has a very smart polygon reduction feature. It does not
have texture mapping unfortunately.
If anyone has a loader which can bring in objects and their
animations into some reasonable format I think we are collectively still
missing such a tool.
