I'm not quite sure to do the animations using java3d a bigginner myself. However I do know that you need to export your model to a .3ds file (all versions of 3dsMax should support this), then you need to download a geometry loader (for java3d) from the web that loads .3ds. Another way to do this, is to export to vrml in Max and then find a vrml loader for java. I'm not quite sure where, but I know you can find links to loaders somewhere on suns web page.
