Swing on JRE 1.1 wasn't too bad. Swing in JRE 1.2 was embarrassing.
The problem was the feature work done on the graphics pipeline which
killed performance. 1.3 and 1.4 (and "Moore's Law") closed the barn
door...

Forté for Java (NetBeans) was unusably slow. Somethings never change.
