Select your cells. Then press control shift 4. This will format your cells for currency.

In office 2003 all I had to do is 1, Alt O 2, Enter on cell 3, Tab to the list and arrow down to currency 4, Tab once into the list 5, Arrow down to make sure that the dollar sign is there.
