I'd complete the data entry in Excel, then format the entire sheet by making
all 3 columns to be the same width as the longest entry. Control A to select
the entire sheet; Alt to go to the ribbon; down arrow to cells; right arrow
into the submenu; down arrow and press enter on format; down arrow past
column width, to auto fit column width, and press enter). Then copy and
paste the 3 columns and all your rows that have data into a Word document. I
don't think you need to merge columns, unless I'm misunderstanding what
you're trying to do.

would need to merge several columns first in Excel.

What I'd do is start with Excel, put in your column headers, then copy and
paste the 3 columns and number of rows you want into a Word document. There
may be a better way, but that's how I create tables.
