Greg -- the problem is that the software that employers want you to have skills with, either students can have no access to them at all -- ie they're way too expensive or they might have a "trial version" that lasts for maybe a week or so. That seems to be all that is available.
 
I'll look into any open source projects that might be available. Don't know if there are a lot of these around though ?
 
(I'm now writing 1 email to respond to all the emails that I have recieved on this subject -- so that I don't by responding to each email in turn, end up sending out a whole lot of emails)
