Along these lines: One of the Wall St. companies I used to work for had a "training program" for IT. They took people right out of college who knew nothing (didn't even necessarily have an IT degree) and put them through a boot camp - manning their data center 24 hrs., taking classes about the Wall St. business, etc.
Hours were long, it was very intense, and it was VERY competitive to get into the program. But the pay was very good for a kid just out of college, and the experience they got was excellent - really brought them up to speed with the real world very quickly. You can try looking around for programs like these, Tim. I'll bet most big, reputable software companies - and other big companies that rely heavily on IT - have them.
