I like the way Window-Eyes says "default button" when reading a
dialogue and coming across the default button in it. Both
Window-Eyes and JFW also have a hot key to specifically identify
the default button on request, but I do like this automatic
identification in addition.
I think Window-Eyes reads the start menu in a more logical
manner. It says the title of a submenu before identifying the
currently highlighted option, rather than the reverse as JFW
does. For example, if I press S for the settings menu, JFW will
say "control Panel" then "Settings" rather than identifying the
more general, menu title before the more specific, menu selection
-- a more intuitive reading order.
Window-Eyes says "top" and "bottom" items in a list box before
reading those items. JFW, on the other hand, does not say
anything when one tries to move past the top or bottom item. If
one then presses down or up arrow to go in the reverse direction,
the second to the top or bottom item is said, respectively,
risking the possibility that one misses the topmost or bottommost
item.
I think JFW should say "tab control" or "property sheet" to identify
such a control. Right now it just says "tab," which is the same thing
said by default when one presses the tab key, allowing one to
easily miss the identification of this control.
I hope JFW verbosity settings are enhanced in the 3.3 release to
meet the high standards set by Window-Eyes. By the way, I also
encourage the Window-Eyes developers to improve their product to
meet other usability standards set by JFW.
