I agree that testing a laptop in the store with JFW is a good idea, but you
still need a good return policy since some compatibility problems are not
obvious or do not show up right away. We have a Quantex notebook at our
center that seems to work fairly well with JFW. When working with text, it
reads it fine, but Toolbar buttons in MS Word 8 are not read by JFW.
Fortunately, JFW doesn't depend on the buttons in Word 8 to determine text
attributes and justification as it did in Word 7. However, if I were to
run an application where I had to depend on accurately labeling the
graphics, I might run into trouble with this notebook. By the way, the
notebook has the new Neomagic 256AV chip set which handles both video and
audio.
The above example was given to show that you can't always tell how well JFW
and notebooks work together unless you are prepared to do a lot of testing.
This is why I think that HJ owes it to its customers to test a variety of
notebooks and publish an updated list on its technical support page just as
it does video cards. Well, actually, they need to do a better job testing
video cards also. If HJ would contact notebook manufacturers, they could
probably get test units for say 30 days or so to check compatibility with
JFW. This would be similar to the way in which computer magazines get
units to test in their labs for published reviews. With the customer base
that HJ has throughout the world, I think they should be able to swing this
with the manufacturers. They could let their tech support people and
engineers use the test notebooks for a period of time and report the
results in the compatibility list. Any comments on this idea are welcome.
