One of the first ones I ever saw was "Purple Rose of Cairo". We actually watched it for my Philosophy of Religion class at college. So romantic and sad...More recently I really enjoyed "Sweet and Lowdown". I especially liked the actress who played Hattie, the deaf girl who falls in love with Sean Penn.
