If the future is determined, then we have no free will, only the illusion of it.

Why does time have to be linear?

Since we do have free will and people can and do forsee events that have yet to happen I don't think the furture is determined. The future is a result of the past, usually. whatever you choose to do forms your future. Just because some is able to 'see' beyond linear time, does not mean one has no free w ill.
