thanks kasey, the system does stink & i wish the powers that be could have
had more sense about how to reform without hurting a lot of innocent people
( most of them as i said earlier are CHILDREN)...

i stay in touch with the college i attended by serving on a committee that
helps parents who are attending school...so all i see is the folks that are
honestly using the system...not those who are abusing it...my feeling is
that the amount of abuse was not equal to the harsh measures that were
enacted...

btw, we have the greatest college system here in california...the community
college system is so affordable & really set up to help single parents...it
takes a year of being a resident before you are eligible for resident status
(vs paying higher out of state tuition) & the community college in this town
is one of the best in the state & in the nation (for 2 year schools) & has
transferred students to many great schools

one of the great success stories is of a young a latino woman who dropped
out of high school because of low self esteem-she thought she was not
academic material (many kids here leave the hs early, take the ged & then
enroll in the community college as it is so much better educationally &
socially) ...she started with a few classes at the college & was encouraged
by the great teachers & counselors to enroll full time, she did really well
& made the honor roll & ended up getting a full scholarhsip to harvard!

the downside is that this town is now the most expensive place (according to
median house prices & available rentals) to live in the state...

kasey >> Unfortunately those that have abused the system have made it hard
on the rest. I think the system stinks right now. As I said in an earlier
post, those that know how to work the system are taking from ones that
need it. <<
