Because in companies home dir is often a network resourse so that users can log
in from any computer and have still always the same data available. However, in
GIS use the home dir may contain quite a lot of data and using it from the
networked home directory possibly through mobile connection and VPS is painful.
We tried to have it that way but it just did not work in our case. For
applications writing and reading less data it would be fine and of course if
home directory in on users own computer.
