If you're running Android 7.x, have you taken battery optimization off of K9? If not, that's your problem. Battery optimization can mess with the polling of K9. Go to Settings, Battery, (three dot menu) Battery optimization and make sure K9 is Not optimized. This is not a K9 issue. Many of us (dare I say almost all of us) are not experiencing any issues with automatic, timed polling.
