THIS WEEK'S TOP 8 SITES

1. In the Footsteps of Lewis & Clark
United States History > Westward Expansion

Exactly 200 years ago this January, Lewis and Clark
dipped their oars into the Missouri River and faced
the great unknown that was the wilderness. Although
their mission was to find the fabled Northwest
Passage -- a stretch of water to link the Atlantic
Ocean with the Pacific -- they instead discovered
the soul of America. This in-depth site makes it
easy for visitors to trace their path in pictures
and words, learn how things have changed since their
journey and how students can help save our shared
wild habitats.

2. FreeVibe.com: AntiDrug Site
Physical Education & Health > Health Issues

Here's a multimedia-rich, teen-oriented Web site that
helps students say no to drugs. A searchable database
of information gives the "lowdown" on drug nicknames,
common effects and side effects, how it works inside
your body and long-term exposure risks. The Shout Out
message boards give teens a place to post their
thoughts and get a healthy dose of positive peer
reinforcement, while My Anti-Drug encourages visitors
to tell the world what people or things in their
lives are keeping them drug-free, now and forever.

3. World War II Time Line
Modern History > World War II > Events & Aftermath

Dozens of period photographs, posters, maps, political
cartoons, newspaper clippings and diagrams help bring
this detailed World War II time line to life -- online.
Begin with the 1917 Bolshevik revolt, continue to the
attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and end with the August
1945 surrender of Japan and VJ Day. This amazing site
is maintained by Steven Schoenherr, a professor of
history at the University of San Diego.

4. Country Information
Political Science > Global Studies > Country Data

Researching another country? Aneki.com can help! More
than 190 countries are represented here, along with
information about their population, capital,
government, languages, area, location, climate,
currency, gross domestic product and budget.
Information about the richest, most populous, largest,
most polluted, cleanest and most expensive countries
are just a click away. Data on quality of life,
Internet users and life expectancy are also available.

5. Found Art!
Subject Support > Visual Arts > Internet Projects

A few years ago, random acts of kindness were all the
rage. Now you and your students can take this concept
to the next level. Found Art! is a growing community
of artists of all ages that creates pictures, poems
and other works of art, and then places them in
hospitals, on grocery-store bulletin boards, even on
bus seats. Each work is tagged with the Found Art!
Web address and the nickname of the artist. Community
members can log on, learn more about the artist and
find clues to locate other random works of art
around town.

6. Civil War Traveler
Military History > Civil War

Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and
Washington, D.C. were all hotspots during the Civil
War. This site encourages students of history to
visit the battlefields and other locations that
featured prominently in the war. Visit Gettysburg
National Park, tour Ford's Theatre, discover John
Wilkes Booth's escape route and step into the Museum
of the Confederacy. Historical information, photos
as well as travel tips are provided.

ELEMENTARY SITES

7. ButterflyCam
Science > Animals > Insects: Butterflies

Educator Karen Vitek and her Web-savvy third-grade
students created the ButterflyCam to help their
fellow students learn all about these beautiful
creatures. Just click on a butterfly to start your
learning adventure. In addition to wonderful color
photos, you'll find information about butterflies'
habitat, host plants, life cycle and even poetry and
puzzles. Starting next month, click the Butterfly's
Live link to see images of the class raising
monarchs. Wow!

8. Diamond R Ranch
Regional Studies > American West > Cowboys

Howdy partner! Mosey on over to the Diamond R Ranch
Web site right quick to learn all about cowboys and
cowgirls. See photos of chuck wagons in action, see

cowboy songs (turn up the volume for these purty
tunes!), play three online games, then grab a fistful
