that's certainly true :-). the trick is to minimize.
one thing by the way, my advice, which is to actually be good at
what you want to work at, isn't just about morality. it's also about
happiness. work need not be just something painful you do so you
can get money. working in IT has these advantages:
1. it's possible (for those who are good, maybe even easy) to work
at things which they enjoy.
2. the better you are at what you do, the easier it is to find work
that you enjoy (and that make you happy).
3. the better you are at what you do, the easier it is to make enough
money to be personally comfortable.
4. both nursing and IT make it relatively easy to immigrate to first
world countries. it's easier for nurses to immigrate, but the problem
is that if you're a nurse and you don't immigrate, it's impossible
to make a good living working at hospitals in the Philippines.
nursing, therefore, gives you fewer choices. you *have* to
outmigrate in order to make the college choice worthwhile. The
IT choice gives you more flexibility. if you take CS but aren't
any good at actually writing software, you can take business
analyst work, or tester work, or go into management.
there are other advantages. Don Manganar tells me that at
foreign owned or BPO companies in manila, *testers* were making
more than I was making working as senior developer at a locally
owned company :-). so it's possible to make lots of money too,
doing what you enjoy doing. what I was making was good enough
to sustain my family in some comfort. but making 2.5-3x that
would be good too.
so my point, about integrity and the corollaries regarding making sure
you're the right match for a job, instead of just accepting a job, are
not merely about not lying and being a "good" person. they're advice
for at least having a happy work life. your personal life is up to
you, but i wouldn't be surprised if integrity and being pragmatic,
and thinking clearly about the match between capabilities, likely
outcomes and the personal choices you make also make it more
likely that you'll have a happy personal life too.
