I live in the Los Angeles area so I'm not sure if this is relevant to
San Diego, but when I got Road Runner nearly two years ago it worked
fine with a Linux box connecting directly to the cable modem. I think
it's just a standard dynamic connection.

I have since started using a wireless router which also has given me
absolutely no connection problems.

It might also be worth noting that I'm a complete nerd and have never
had to call support. When the tech guy was here setting up I happened
to have a laptop with Windows on it and didn't want to bother him with
Linux questions during the initial setup.

That's what I figured, but you know how un-technical sales training can
be. I didn't bother to contradict the teacher because it would have just
confused people, but I wanted to know for myself. The funniest part was
when I asked if other OSs were supported, the teacher laughed, saying
"There are no other Operating Systems!" and when I mentioned linux, she
said, "What is this 20 years ago?" Ah the uninformed, how they love to
be put in charge :-)

Apparently there are others at Time Warner that aren't too technical or informed. They rat fsck'd us today (hmm, after midnight, so that would be yesterday) when they fsck'd something up causing our Internet link to run the speed of a snail. Even with the redundant connections with three different providers, it still screwed us.

I don't know who is worse, the way Level 3 treated us at Akamai or the way Time Warner treated us today. Although, Level 3 did it way more often (so far).
