I'm in San Diego and have had Road Runner here a few years. It
ordinarily works fine for me too with a Linux box connecting directly
to the cable modem, but I usually have an inexpensive router in
between,which also normally works.

I've occasionally had good luck telling support people that my
problem is probably just the same with Linux as Windows. I sometimes
apologize in advance for accidentally using Linux terminology
instead of Windows.

Paul G. Allen's current problems with Road Runner sound worse than
anything I've encountered, but I may only do comparatively trivial
things with Road Runner and I am only guessing that his problems are
worse.

I hope the teacher eventually realizes that some people are bypassing
20 years worth of problems :-)
