Yeah, it works--except for interactive performance, video playback
response, 3D handling, font rendering, international input, and running
reliably on a modern graphics card.
X is not made for those things, nor should it be. It is a framework for
use in providing those things. 3D is what OpenGL is for, and the X
extensions for using OpenGL. Remember that OpenGL was developed on X
systems and it works just fine. In fact, every 3D application I've ever
used that has a version for Windows works faster and more reliably on
Linux. I've also found it easier to program a 3D application for X than
for Windows (and I've done more than a few).
Poor video playback is the problem of the video app, not X.
Font rendering works fine for me, what's the complaint here? Details?
Running reliably on modern video hardware is a problem with hardware
mfgs either not providing drivers, or not providing developers with the
information so that they can provide the drivers. I;m afraid this may be
the case for a a while yet (though things are looking better with AMD
opening up the ATI specs.)
