Oh goodness...  You just opened up a can of worms there!  I think you 
have that reversed, but even so, define "a lot".

Truth is, either engine, in their own proper context is acceptable, and 
you have fans of both on this list.
I know Dan Heath has/had a complete FWF VW package that he's been trying 
to sell since he upgraded to the 'viar (for more power).  You might talk 
with him.

If you assert that a list of engines is reliable (assuming that you 
build a basic, reliable model... not a 900 cu in supercharged whiz-bang 
super corvair/vw), then it would be pretty easy to make a matrix of 
power, weight, cost, etc... and pick the right one for your 
application.  Don't forget to include the old standby aircraft engines 
in that list.  I guess the real question you have to ask is what do you 
want your airplane to do?  Cross countries?  Climb like hell?  Sunday 
flier?  IFR?  For each of those options, I would choose a different 
engine, but that's just me.
