Robert,

I have to wonder, where is your source of information? I do not mean to insult
you, I am just curious. When you state that you hear a lot of folks are
switching to the Corvair due to a lot of crank breaks and other problems with
the VW ?????

The crank break and other issues have been a source of concern and issue with
the Corvair motor, not the VW. The VW has been a proven to be reliable auto
conversion engine for decades. Several companies sell direct conversion,
conversion kits and even new engines that are based on the VW.

Yes, the VW engine requires valve adjustments on a 100 hour or probably an
annual basis and I do mine every year at annual but I am not aware of any
significant number of crank failures on a actual fully converted VW engine in
some time. However, crank failures, camshaft failures cam gear failures and
other problems seem to hit the news on a somewhat regular basis.

Now, I can not claim to have the experience of some or lots of others here on
this forum and dont get me wrong, I love the idea of having six cylinders in a
Corvair verses four in the VW. A six will always be smoother, but, I think if
we look at facts, the Corvair is the engine that is still in a development or
proving stage as far as reliability.

I think Great Plains aircraft has the VW motor down to a well proven product
and they are am amazing company to work with. I cant speak for Revmaster but I
know they have a new VW based motor on the market and they have been doing VW
conversions for decades just like Great Plains.

I do believe that Mark Jones has several hundred hours on his Corvair and a few
others do as well. Im not trying to knock the Corvair conversion per say but I
think you seem to have your facts turned around. Your last sentence might read,
Or have the Corvairs gotten better and now just getting a bad rap?

OK that is the question. To VW or Not To VW?
The project that I purchased came with a VW engine mount installed. I
have been hearing a lot of folks are converting to the Corvair due to
a lot of crank breaks and other problems with the VW. So I ask all my
fellow KRers should I convert to a Corvair now while I am still in a
boat stage and have not started the front deck or cowling? Or have the
VW's gotten better and now just getting a bad rap?
