The crank break with vw is for the TypeIV engine. That was the vw that was the promise of more power after the 2180 typeIII engine. It lost favor after it was costly and tended to break cranks. The Corvair took over around that point in time. I don't remember the exact dates but the cronology is accurate from vw TypeIII to vw TypeIV to Corvair as being the most popular KR engine.
