I have a process involving raterising PDF document into JPEG preview
for browser viewing. In most cases, the JPEG images tend to be too
bright. I mean it is brighter than the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat.

I think Adobe is doing some profiling on PDF document to get a perfect
look. I am thinking whether or not it is possible to apply a profile on
the JPEG to produce a closer to Acrobat for image.

I know there is "jpegicc" which applies profile to JPEG image. But I do
not know what profile I can apply to image so that image can have a closer
look to Acrobat Viewer. Any ideas? I can supply some comparable images if
you need.

Philipp,

afeter looking at your PDF file, I think your problem is that the blue colors in the PDF file are specified in DeviceCMYK color space. Therefore the results will look different, if you send them to different output devices. DeviceRGB and DeviceCMYK colors in PostScript are basically not subject to color managent, but are interpreted as native device colors of the output device used. Acrobat Reader on the other hand seems to remap DeviceCMYK somehow, but appearently only, if the PDF file is displayed on the screen, but it also not when it is printed to a PostScript file - the PostScript file again contains the blue color specified in DeviceCMYK color space. It definitely looks like Acrobat Reader does remap the DeviceCMYK color differently than the DeviceCMYK -> DeviceRGB conversion specified in the PostScript Language Reference Manual (PLRM). I am pretty confident that gs will simply honor the formula specified in the PLMR (if you haven't remapped DeviceCMYK to a CIE based color space), but I don't know which CMYK color space Acrobat Reader assumes for displaying DeviceCMYK values on the screen.

Best Regards,
Gerhard
