Philipp,Thanks Gerhard for your comments. But what I want to do is to make the preview match the look in Acrobat since customers will not be sure what colors they will get from printer when they order online. That's why I am thinking of applying a profile to the preview to get a match with Acrobat. It seems this is not an easy assignment.
I suspect you rather don't want to get a preview which necessarily matches the look in Acrobat reader, but rather a preview which matches the print (after printing the PDF file), is that correct?
The problem with your goal is, that your PDF file is device dependent and not color managed. I suspect, it was created for being printed on a specific printer. However, without additional information about the color characteristic of this printer (e.g. an ICC profile or CSA) it won't be possible to create a preview with the right colors. Basically, a PDF or PostScript file could contain a CSA describing the color space, however, your PDF file does not. So both, ghostscript and acroread can only make some assumptions what the right colors might be, and they make different assumtions, and therefore they display different colors. But what makes you sure that the colors displayed by acroread really match the colors of the print exactly? (However, I also agree that the colors displayed by acroread look at least more reasonable than ghostscript, compared to the DeviceCMYK colors being interpreted for instance as U.S. Web Coated SWOP by applying a corresponding CSA).
So I'm also wondering
- On which printer is the PDF file supposed to be printed (i.e. do you have an
ICC profile or CSA describing the color characteristics of this printer)?
- How was your PDF file generated? Could you alternatively generate a device independent PDF file, which uses CIE based color spaces instead of DeviceCMYK?
