That would be because you're running Slack, not SuSE. And at any rate,
SuSE calls it config.gz, so a search for proconfig might not turn anything
up.
"CONFIG_PROC_CONFIG=y" is the entry in my .config file, actually. You may
want to try for that. I don't currently have a vanilla 2.4.2 source tree
to poke around in. In SuSE's case, it lives as a secondary option under
"CONFIG_PROC_FS" in the filesystems menu.
