As for me, I really like the R&P (Rack and Pinon) controls, I find it better
all the way around form using a lead screw. (personal preference )
I also think that a 5"- 7" depth is all that is needed for most jobs, there is
no reasoning to go with a monster set-up, it just cost to much money, and is
not worth the added expense.

I have also have started using a smaller router motor (to limit the weight)
For Me, I find the 3 1/2 horse PC router that Legacy rec emended is a huge over
kill, The Alum. rails and bushings cannot handle the tork of this kind of motor
cutting at full depth of cut. I find for my Legacy, a 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 horse
power is plenty of power for cutting most wood projects.
Side Note to Bill & Joe. Do you have any photos of your Z axis's you both
made? Also Joe... YOUR monster Z axis was breathtaking to see, I would very
much like your input on this as well, Do you think I am correct? or not...

Have you tried looking at the top-hat bushings? They can be rotated to another
spot and they will be like brand new.

Their were 3 designs that I’m aware of. The last design did have a plunge rod
like the plunge routers to help with the plunge problem.
Another more frequently written about is how the first version, there is a stop
on the left side. In use, it is driven down by the power of the acme thread and
that causes the router to plunge deeper. For that a showed an example rework
of the stop. It’s somewhere buried in the old messages. It’s probably in 2012.
I’ve never seen anyone use a plunge router in a z-axis design. I’ve thought
about it and I think it’s not needed.
Sitting in my shop there are parts for a z-axis for the newer style machines,
but I’ve not finished the design yet. Curt keeps nudging with new ideas, and at
some point you just need to freeze a design and build it. Fix any issues on
the next one and hopefully the third one will work!

I have the crank style Z axis with digital readout. It uses a height bar setup.
You dial in the height and lock the bar. Then try to reproduce that height, no
way. As the router drops, the z carriage cocks a little to one side and goes
deeper than set. I have done all I can think of to take the play out of the
carriage, but to no avail. When i purchased this upgrade i thought it was cool.
Not so much now. When the router is running it will settle some on its own. I
will eventually come up with somehing.
