What I have assumed is that one of the two parents gave birth to the child -
that the child is not adopted. If indeed the child is adopted then the whole
issue is moot. Otherwise to my knowledge and understanding the female giving
birth is the mother regardless of family connections. The other "parent" can
be designated as one likes but she would not be the mother.

Aye, there's the rub, Ron. I would prefer not to have to make that decision
at all, and be able to assign them as Parent 1 and Parent 2 or something.
But, since I must choose, I look at them and assign the one with short hair
wearing plaid flannel shirts the role of husband. ;-)
