Alfred,

The number generated from your web site is of little value for Legacy, but the ones generated automatically by Legacy itself are quite valuable because there is a UID for each individual record. There is no need for you to create them. Here is an example how they are useful. Say you and a cousin are both working on the family. You are designated as the master file keeper, and you send him a copy of your data. He reviews it and makes corrections or adds information, then send the file back to you. When you import the file, rather than having to manually merge all the duplicates the UID matches up the records. Only the ones that have been changed are presented to you to review, while the identical ones are automatically merged.

UUID stands for Universally Unique IDentifier, GUID for Globally Unique
IDentifier. The correct way to construct these identifiers is described
in RFC 4122 <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4122.txt>, ITU-T Rec. X.667
<http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/studygroups/com17/oid.html> and ISO/IEC
11578:1996 <http://www.iso.ch/cate/d2229.html>.

If you go to http://www.famkruithof.net/uuid/uuidgen, this site will
generate a unique identifier
for you to use for any application, data base or record. Press refresh
in browser to generate a new one. I haven't figured out
how useful it would be in Legacy. Windows uses a form of this identifier
in the registry to identify applications.

Jim,

My understanding has always been that in Gedcoms UID stands fo "Unique Identifier" and *not* "Universal ID"

A Universal Identifier is a unique ID assigned to a particular record
created at a particular time on a particular system. Identical records
created at the same time on different systems will have different Universal Identifiers. Legacy creates?/maintains Universal Identifiers and will export them in gedcoms (tag = _UID) but I've found no way so far to view them from
within the program.

While searching for persons in my family tree I often see a "Universal
Identifier" in conjunction with a person. What is a "Universal
Identifier" and how is it arrived at? Can it be used with Legacy
software?
Thanks,
Owen
