Cathy - you are one of the folks I believe really understands the Legacy program and I appreciate your responses. I've only been using Legacy for a couple of months, but am finding so many ways to use it, I wonder why I never tried it before. BTW- I really appreciate the 'copy to clipboard' suggestion of a few days ago - it really speeded up data entry when similar data affects multiple folks.
As with all programs, I am 'self-educating' with the help of the net. Could you shed some light on the sentence on page 109 of the manual that states 'FILE ID ... you can enter a file number to reference .... in your research folder'? Not knowing for sure how this works, I set up a 'research folder' in the Legacy--> Data file (along with storing my Genealogy Photos there) into which I have dumped all sorts of items - lately downloaded census copies. Could you suggest a way to number these files. I initially entitle them as '1870 US Federal Census for Joe Smith'. I then entitled it in the File ID as 'Kirby' and it affects dozens of my entries. So when I add the File ID as 'Kirby', the program keeps multiple entries of it in the File ID area. Is this normal? Also, is there a recommended (better) numbering/identification method to associate the census title I initially assigned and the File ID? Again, I presume that the 'Kirby +1' (1880 US Federal Census for Joe Smith) is additional data within the same parameters as my 'Kirby' would be when I have multiple source documents I want to include. Also, is adding the census as an event an overkill when I print out a 'book'?? The data prints out for each of the census years I made into an event. I hope some of this makes sense since it is a multi-question problem and I'm trying to figure out an acceptable model to use. You need to distinguish between the program and the data files you create using it - both Family Files (.fdb) and Backup files (.zip) (and many others with your Family File name and a different extension that you can let the program look after). Family Files will have an icon with the Legacy logo on it so that may be the source of your confusion. Only the program gets called "Legacy." You don't normally have a backup of the program - it's useless as programs need to be installed, not copied - though you may keep the Installation file on your flash drive or elsewhere in case you need to reinstall when you don't have quick access to the internet to download a new copy. When you get a dialogue window looking for a file to open or restore OR to save a new Family File or a backup, get into the habit of checking that the Look in: or Save in: folder is the correct one. If not you have to navigate to the right one. As Ron says, Legacy usually remembers the last place used, but sometimes needs to be reminded. Now you say you've opened Legacy and gone to File > Restore and there are no files showing in the box. This means that it isn't at the right folder and you have to look for the folder with the backup in it. It doesn't matter if that is on the flash drive, the hard drive or a CD you've made. Legacy will still open it and save it as a Family File wherever you tell it to. (You can't tell it to save it as a Family File on a CD.)
