That will only give you the option to sort by one item at a time. One of her
messages seemed to indicate she wanted to sort by one criteria, then take a
sub-group from that list and sort by another criteria, then do the same
again with another criteria. She said "where I can search the birth years,
and then search again *in that search* (emphasis mine) for the place and
then the father." You cannot use a single column sort to narrow down
multiple variables.

Have you tried looking at your data with genviewer?
Once loaded, it can read your legacy file directly or a gedcom, select
list mode, indicate what columns you want, click on top of columns to sort
by that option.
It has a nice scripting language as well to highlight selected items.
It can also dump all columns to comma delimited text file. (CTRL-C)

Excel has problems with dates older than 1900. If you use a spreadsheet
program to look at extracted data use open office instead.
